CI creation using ServiceNow
Catalog item: CMDB – Infrastructure CI server record creation request (ServiceNow)
Steps
-
Access the catalog item
Open ServiceNow and navigate to the CI creation catalog item (typically under ITSM or CMDB). (1) -
Select device type
Choose the appropriate device type (e.g., ESXi server). For a virtual server, select “virtual server” as the model. (2) -
Enter FQDN and hostname
Provide the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) used for ABB corporate network communication (e.g.,PCPESX.se.abb.com). The hostname must match the device’s actual name. (3) -
Set location
If searching by location ID or site ID doesn’t work, use the physical address. Reference master data for accuracy. If the site spans multiple locations, select the correct one. (4) -
Status and install details
Set Status tooperationaland Install status toinstalled. Enter the installation date (usually when the device was physically installed). (5) -
Assign ownership
Add the server owner, server manager, and server operations team. Use internal IDs from ServiceNow for consistency. If unsure, you may use email, but some requests can be rejected for not using IDs. (6) -
Model and serial number
- Physical servers: enter the model (e.g., Dell PowerEdge R730) and the service tag/serial number from the hardware.
- Virtual servers: use the vSphere-provided serial number. (7)
-
Network and OS details
Enter the IP address (used for ABB network communication), subnet, and operating system (e.g., VMware ESXi). Specify the OS version and architecture (ESXi is always 64-bit). (8) -
Hardware specs
Provide CPU (e.g., Intel Xeon Gold 6140), number of CPUs, core count, RAM (MB), and storage (GB). (9) -
Service level and usage
Set the service level classification (usually D for PCP) and specify usage (default production, unless agreed otherwise). (10) -
Financial and organizational info
Add cost center, owning country (e.g., Sweden), owning company (e.g., SEABS), and division (e.g., PAEM). Double-check codes—ServiceNow and documentation may differ. (11) -
